Murphy's Newsletter
October 2006 - Part 1

So over the course of the summer, and into the fall, Murphy has been enjoying spending time both inside and out. Let's start with the "outside" portion of this update.

Murphy loves our yard, and has developed a little ritual that he does every time he goes outside. First, he checks on the neighbours, who have two dogs, a pit bull cross and a Rottweiller:

Often he wedges himself in by a planter for a better view:

Then he sort of gets a feel for the whole place:

Then he wanders over to the gate to see what's happening in the outside world:

He does this day or night:

This routine gets incredibly frustrating when you just want him to go for a quick pee, especially when it's RAINING! Often times he likes to just hang out and look around:

Or even lie down:

He will do this after being inside for over 12 hours when I've slept in, before even relieving himself! He has some sort of bladder previously unknown to science. I have to pick him up and tell him to pee.

But there was a lot of time over the summer to just hang out. One day I went outside to read for awhile, and ended up taking a bunch of pictures of Murphy instead:

He's just too cute to resist. In the first one (of this set of three) you can see me crouched down in the reflection of the door.

One day, for no apparent reason, he decided to dog a hole in the far left corner of our yard. I've never seen Murphy dig a hole before, or since. First we have him with his head halfway underground:

Here's the hole (this area had been covered in mulch):

Then he just lay down for a rest:

This one gives you a sense of where he was in the yard:

And here is his very dirty nose and ear:

Another day Murphy was in a more active mood, and was tearing about the yard. Then he started jumping between the two grassy parts of the yard. The first one shows him sitting, to give you a sense of perspective:

I measured that gap, it's over 3 feet across. The next two photos give you a sense of how quickly he was moving. I had Murphy jumping over and over again, in the vain hope of getting a non-blurred picture. It was no use:

The third shows him landing:

And here he is waggling as he goes by me:

Murphy also enjoys just rolling around, especially if it means destroying my lawn, which I've worked on for over 6 months, laying down new sod and watering it like a maniac every 3 days:

Above we have Murphy starting to roll about. The picture below gives a sense of the force that he does this with:

He's blurred he whipping about so fast! Next is the hole that he created:

I know it doesn't look that bad in the photo, but that patch is still bare, and it's now 3 months later!

Murphy of course is always quite pleased with himself with whatever it is he's gotten up to that's earned him some photos:

But it is quite tiring running about the yard:

So that's it for the "outside" portion of the update. I think I'll do the "inside" stuff in a separate update, just to keep you hanging.
