Murphy's Newsletter
December 2007
I'm currently on my spring vacation, so
I've finally buckled down to crank out 5 months worth of Murphy
Updates. First up, Christmas!
As most of you know every year I send out
a Christmas card featuring Murphy in some
silly situation. Unfortunately I'm rapidly running out of ideas
as I've already done a snow scene, a visit with Santa, working
in a toy shop as an elf, a visit with the Grinch and even a New
Years party with Murphy in a tux. I start thinking about this
card in September, and I'd come up with a few ideas, but they
all presented technical obstacles when putting Murph into the
mix. But Allie came to my rescue. She sells handmade cards online
under her brand Notesworthy. We brainstormed, she did some
hunting online, and found a really good stamp of an English Cocker.
We bounced ideas around, then she made a few prototypes, and
she came up with the design you see above. Initially she thought
these would be simple to make, but they turned out to need something
like 8 separate steps. Thank you Allie!
We also got lots of cards from our friends
around the world, as my online cocker group does a Christmas
card exchange every year. To your left you see Murphy bringing
in that day's card.
As for Christmas itself, it was very low
key this year, as I worked Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and
Allie and family were down in Texas this year. But it turned
out to be a really nice celebration - Christmas morning at home
with my parents and Murphy, then a potluck Christmas dinner at
St Paul's with coworkers. But when it came to Murphy, it was
pretty much the usual Christmas - lots of treats. Below we have
Murphy opening his presents.
At first he behaves, and sits patiently...
...then he starts getting his nose
into things...
...then he loses all patience
Murphy got all sorts of treats
from me, my parents and Allie:
We're slowly working through all of them,
but due to his allergies we're taking it very slowly, to see
if he reacts to any of them. Everyone went out of their way to
find wheat/chicken/beef free treats. In addition I gave him a
leash/collar combo in red plaid, a wintery sort of set. Murphy
also got a gift from my friend Tiffany:
It's a towel, with an accompanying face
cloth that we use for his paws. It's practically a blanket for
Murphy, so one day I used it as such:
You might notice that from here on the
pictures of Murphy feature much reduced red eye. That's thanks
to a new camera my parents gave me for Christmas. Thanks Mom
and Dad!
Now we move into just your regular winter stuff.
It seemed like this year Vancouver got more than its usual share
of snow (in fact we just had some a few weeks ago - the end of
MARCH). Murphy loves the snow, so I took some video of him. Neither
are the best quality, as it was overcast that day, and my ability
with the new camera is severely limited!
The first one is
Murphy wandering in , pouncing on and eating the snow.
The second one is
me stomping my feet and him jumping around in the snow in response.
Murphy has decided this year that he likes
to eat snow. In the past he'd stick his nose in it and snuffle
it, or dig in it, or try to catch snowballs, but this year he
just sticks his nose in, fluffs it up a bit and starts eating!
Below you can see him head down in the snow. I have no idea where
this is coming from.
Late in January we were out playing in the yard
- it was warmer, and nearly all the snow had melted except in
higher up places like where I live, in a valley part way up the
mountains - so I thought we should capitalize on the snow while
we had it. So I was out there in baggy sweats, a hoodie, little
boots and mitts, kicking snow at Murphy while he jumped around
and got COVERED in it from head to toe. He was running around,
jumping in circles, loving every minute, and I was laughing and
laughing, and talking and shouting at him, and throwing snowballs
at him to catch. By the time we were done the snow in the yard
looked like a tornado had run through it. Then I realized that
all my upstairs neighbours (there are 3 floors above me) could
be looking down into my yard wondering what the hell this person,
who looks like a raggedy 15 year old kid, is doing kicking and
throwing snow at this poor little dog! Luckily
we've had no visits from our Animal Welfare Office so far.
